"At first glance, Conover's works seem vain at best and antithetical or self-serving at worst. His series of self-portraits is especially polarizing: with every entry, he depicts himself as a decreasingly humanoid animal.

Critics often cite Composition with North and South as his magnum opus, featuring two strange sci-fi weapons with his initials and a flatworm (usually interpreted as another self-portrait). One can only wonder goes on in Conover's mind for him to come up with such abstract pieces."
